Background of the study
Sports have long been recognized as a powerful tool for fostering social inclusion, particularly among marginalized youth. In Enugu State, sports initiatives provide a unique platform for social integration, personal development, and community empowerment. Participation in sports offers marginalized youth opportunities to build self-esteem, develop teamwork skills, and forge social bonds that transcend socioeconomic barriers. Various local sports programs, community leagues, and school-based initiatives have been implemented with the aim of promoting inclusivity and reducing social disparities. The positive impact of sports extends beyond physical health, contributing to psychological well-being and the development of life skills that are essential for personal and social growth (Chukwu, 2023). Moreover, sports serve as a medium for cultural expression and community pride, offering a constructive outlet for channeling energy and creativity. However, challenges such as inadequate funding, limited access to facilities, and socio-cultural biases continue to hinder the full potential of sports programs. This study aims to evaluate how sports can serve as a catalyst for social inclusion among marginalized youth in Enugu State. By examining existing programs and their outcomes, the research seeks to highlight both the benefits and challenges of using sports as a vehicle for social change, thereby contributing to the formulation of policies that foster a more inclusive society (Uche, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Despite the recognized benefits of sports for social inclusion, marginalized youth in Enugu State continue to face barriers that limit their participation in organized sports programs. Issues such as inadequate infrastructure, insufficient funding, and socio-cultural constraints restrict access to quality sports facilities and training. These limitations not only impede the physical development of the youth but also reduce opportunities for social interaction and community building. Consequently, the potential of sports to serve as a transformative tool for social inclusion is not fully realized. This study seeks to address the challenges that hinder the effective use of sports as a catalyst for social inclusion among marginalized youth, providing a critical evaluation of existing programs and identifying areas for improvement (Nduka, 2023).
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the role of sports in promoting social inclusion among marginalized youth in Enugu State.
To identify challenges affecting the participation of marginalized youth in sports programs.
To recommend strategies for enhancing sports-based social inclusion initiatives.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the transformative potential of sports in fostering social inclusion among marginalized youth in Enugu State. The research provides evidence-based insights for community organizers, policymakers, and educators on the benefits of sports for social integration and personal development. By identifying the challenges and proposing effective strategies, the study contributes to the formulation of initiatives that promote greater inclusivity, thereby enhancing social cohesion and community empowerment (Ifeanyi, 2024).
